The Battle for Civilization

If you haven't heard of the Botkin family before, let me tell you they do some amazing video/film work. They have made several outstanding documentaries such as The League of Grateful Sons and just recently the highly controversial The Return of the Daughters. Geof Botkin is a huge part of the faculty for the SAICFF, and Isaac Botkin has a fantastic blog: Outside Hollywood.

Well, the Botkin family has just announced their latest project, The Battle for Civilization, and it looks very, very, very good. I highly suggest you check out the trailer!

Film makers, get out your pencils and start taking notes!

Hebrews in New Mexico?

The has for a long time been constant cry that Columbus was not the fist man from the "continent" to discover north america, before him, the Vikings, and the Chinese. I have always loved little known facts in tidbits about history. Much of what current Academia tells us, and much of what North Americans 'know to be true" about the ancient world is way of. there is much, much, much evidence that people have been traveling back and forth from north america to "the continent" for many thousands of years, and leaving their mark. Not just in exploration, and one time trips or rediscovery, and rediscovery, and rediscovery, and rediscovery... but even in regular trading!
However, this simple short documentary shows evidence for something that I had never heard of.

Watch the video here: http://visionarydaughters.com/2008/03/research-on-hidden-mountain

From a video makers perspective, I also really like this video. It may just be a short like youtube esc video, but it looks professional. Not only is the sound clean and the shots well composed, but the mountain fly-over graphics, and the well orchestrated (not cheep sounding) music that fits with the feel of the vid, add huge production value.
One thing I really like is the simple VFX that they used to show the petroglyphs and text worked really well. But then again, what do you expect from a Botkin production?
The only real crit I had was Noah seems to stumble a bit on his lines. He might have benefited from another take.

The treasure room...

Well, in just a few days (2 I think), I have turned this...

...into this:

I am very happy with how quickly this model is coming along compared to the the space ship (days as opposed to weeks)! In this room TT and Bebo must count seemingly uncountable amounts of gold in order to achieve their goal of getting the treasure! That is, until they learn the lessons and skill of... Subitize.
There is still a bit of work that needs to be done on the model before I can start rendering and compositing. The roof of the porch, for instance, needs to be textured, and the gold screens need a bit of help. Also, the balcony is a bit narrow, so that will have to be expanded as well as the lighting tweaked.

Here are some more renders for you to enjoy.

The view for the porch.

Hallway to the treasure room.

And a top down render, showing the lay out. Can you count the gold coins?

Amazing Math Green Screen (Again)

Well, I used the setting in between the one I used the last time and the one used the first shoot. So far it looks as though the green is better than the previous attempts (haven't tried a key yet though). However, the the skin tones, and overall colors of the the actors are not that good. Also, somehow it blew out more often than last time (less exposure this time). I also forgot to white balance the camera before the shoot (I know, I know, I should ALWAYS white balance before a shoot...), and that may have something to do with the color; hopefully, color correction won't effect the finished image too badly.

Also, discovered that setting my betchtech audio adapter to mono gives really quiet audio pick- up with large amounts of hiss, oy. Apparently I used the stereo option the other two shoots, and it is what I will use from now on as it gives MUCH better audio, even if it is only in one channel. I hope it won't be too much of a nightmare (and trust me it can) cleaning up the audio...

Amazing Math Filming day #3

Once again the the miracle that I call my "studio" happened in my basement. Pictures don't do it justice but, here is a before and after pict. I will try and get some more for next time, as I am still amazed at the drastic change. I long for the day I have my own studio (no renting for me!). I literally rearrange the entire basement EVERY every time I film! Twice.

Living Room Variation.

Studio Variation. (Note: you can see in this image that I have added two black X's to the green screen. Those are so that if the camera shakes I can use them to easily track the shake and stabilize the footage! I just used some black hockey tape. After many hours of shooting it came off nicely, leaving no residue. I would expect however that if I left it on for a month or something it would leave nasty sticky behind.)

We got started really late (about a full hour!), so didn't finish. However, I think we will only need one more good day of filming to finish up. Also, possibly adding to the slowness today, was the fact I didn't have any story boards ready. You don't really realize how nice they are to have, and how they move things along until you don't have them.
TT takes a break.

Everyday life on the set.

Hockey Commercial

I spend the last weekend making a commercial for a hockey game fundraiser event (in Canada these always do well ;) ).

The fundraiser is for a trip a group (60ish of us) I am involved with this year is taking called the Joshua Project. The Joshua Project is a 6 month leadership training coarse for young adults. It was started by Damian Dunn, former Dallas Cowboys Player, who feels called to Calgary to help raise up the "Joshuas" of this generation. We are fundraising for a trip to Dallas, TX for a weekend intensive with some big church leaders like Chuck Swindoll, and others.

Amazing Math Report

Well things are going slowly here, but some things have been done. Here are some images of things I have been working on:
